“I feel happy when I play football. I don’t think of any problems at all,” says 14-year-old Margaret, a midfielder. For girls in South Sudan, gender discrimination is, sadly, a part of everyday life. Half of them will go through child marriage.
But, on the football field, girls show their community and themselves that they are powerful. It’s this confidence that’s required to stand up and to believe that change is possible. “Boys and girls are able to do the same thing. Girls can play well – sometimes better than boys,” says Margaret.
By buying a simple football for a Child Friendly Space, you can help young people like Margaret to enjoy a new sport and feel more empowered at the same time.
